We Attended Escapar a La Baja: 4 Days in Vanlife Paradise

We Attended Escapar a La Baja

4 Days in Vanlife Paradise

We just came back from Mexico, where the Simpler Ways team attended the third edition of Escapar a la Baja, an eclectic gathering of nomads of all walks of life traveling in rigs of all shapes and sizes. Here's a small write-up to share about our experience on the ground.

Escapar a la Baja is an annual vanlife and overlanding free event held in Baja California Sur, organized by The Journal of Lost Time. I've been going to Baja California every winter for a few years in a row now, and have attended this event since its inception, two years ago. It has now turned into quite the rendezvous, to the delight of the 500 attendees who drove down this year.

Winters in Baja — especially on the Sea of Cortez side — are hard to beat: the warm and salty breeze, the meticulous procession of the pelicans out for fishing, the temperature dropping to just the right amount of chill at night, the sky offering a constantly changing color palette — and outstanding star gazing at night... a show all of us got to enjoy for 4 days straight, as we got to make new friends from our community.

On the last count, over 250 rigs were parked across Playa El Tecolote, a remote beach outside of La Paz in the South of the peninsula. This wonderful event was unique in its diversity of both people and vehicles - locals and travelers from around the world, solo vanlifers, friends and families, panamerican travelers, in all sorts of rigs. We saw awesome skoolies, fearless Vanagons, comfortable RVs, Japanese 4x4 ambulances and Unimogs, all coexisting and exchanging tips and stories from the road.

We can't wait to go again next year! Until then, here's a selection of pictures we took on the ground.

See you on the road,
