The Even Simpler Way to Live on the Road
Have you been dreaming about hitting the wide open road for a while, but haven't been quite ready to purchase a van yet? More and more people turn to a lesser known, yet easier and cheaper way of living nomadically: car camping. It's an ideal introductory experience to life on the road, and one that is more affordable than other vehicles.
Car camping comes with a lot of flexibility: the smaller size allows you to park where most vans won't, and you'll be able to stealth camp like a champ. Your gas mileage will likely be far better, and with the right vehicle, you'll still be able to drive to remote places. Car camping will give you the excitement of spending the night outdoors without breaking the bank.
Volume being so limited, it's also an exercise in simplicity: there is no room for the superfluous. Being fonds of space-optimized design, this makes it all the more interesting to us! We were curious to know more about it, so we asked Larissa, a car camping expert, to tell us about the configuration in her car.
Six months in a Honda C-RV
Larissa is a lawyer, adventure enthusiast and photographer. In 2019, she decided to live a few months of solo adventures. She didn't have the budget to buy a van nor the time to build one, so she opted for a simpler and cheaper option: she turned the car she already owned, a C-RV, into a comfortable little home on wheels.
She took out the back seats, bought a universal SUV air mattress, and added a foam topper to make it as comfortable as it gets. Cut out Reflectix® to the shape of her windows, brought her camping essentials for cooking, and bought a DC to AC inverter to charge her devices so she could work on the road. Some organizations and adjustments were necessary, but in just a few days, she had her little car camper of her own!

In Larissa's words
“I explored and camped in my C-RV as a way to travel the western United States affordably for months.
My "CRV-life" was focused on the outdoors, and I loved (and sometimes still miss) waking up, stepping outside and being in nature. I would often start the day by walking around wherever I was with a cup of coffee.
If you’re thinking about camping in your car – whether for a weekend or multiple months – I strongly recommend giving it a try. It’s a fantastic way to “try on” van life without the commitment and expense of building out a van. You can always get one later!”
Larissa, lived and traveled in her car for 6 months
